½ cup sugar

½ cup shortening

½ cup molasses

1 egg

¼ cup buttermilk

¼ tsp. salt

½ tsp. cinnamon

¼ tsp. cloves

½ tsp. nutmeg

½ tsp. ginger

1 tsp. soda

1 tsp. vinegar

2 ⅛ cups flour

Frosting:

2 Tbsp. butter

2 Tbsp. cream

1 cup sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening and sugar.

Add egg and beat well.

Add molasses and beat.

Add buttermilk and beat.

In a cup, add soda to vinegar and mix into batter.

Add sifted dry ingredients.

Drop on cookie sheet by spoonfuls.

Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

Frosting:

Bring butter and cream to boil and add powdered sugar.

I don’t double this recipe because of all the spice.
